About Cole Kambeitz

My photo
Cole Jonathan Kambeitz was born October 5th, 2008. He was born with chicken pox-like lesions on his skin. After a CT scan, MRI, x-ray, ultrasound, and a biopsy, he was diagnosed with Langerhans Cell Hystiocytosis (LCH) at 3 days old. It affects his skin, liver and lungs. He completed treatment of 1 year of chemo and steroids and after a liver biopsy in late November '09 confirming no active disease, he is officially in remission. Today he is a very happy boy, excited to explore the world.

Saturday 10/18 - G-CSF treatment

Today we learned how to give Cole shots of G-CSF under his skin. G-CSF is a white blood cell hormone drug and helps him to increase his white blood cell count so he's less at risk of infections.

It's really easy to administer. Basically grab a leg and inject under the skin. The needle is super small and the dose is really tiny .1ML. We're in and out before he even realizes what happened.

It took about 3 hours before we got out of the hospital. Got training on how to give him the shot, practiced on a dummy and then gave him his first of 7 daily shots. We also had to wait an hour afterwards to see how he'd react to the drug. No problems. Joe took Ruby to the playroom on the 10th floor so she was entertained. We also got a load of supplies to administer the drugs.

Another 3 hours at the hospital.

PS: Tried out Phnom Penh Cambodian food in Chinatown - pretty good, crummy looking on the outside, nice inside. Food was MUCH better than in actual Cambodia. Quite flavorful and different than Thai.
