Well today was a challenging day.
The bad news:
1. We found out the reason Cole had a fever - he has a bacterial infection Psuedemonas. So he must be on antibiotics for 14 days to treat this. He is currently on Tobramycin and Zosyn two big time antibiotics. They are administered 3x a day through his broviac catheter. Each day they will be doing a blood draw to check his condition (CBC and cultures).
2. Chemo is on hold until his white blood count (ANC) is > 1,000. Right now it is at 352 way below the 500 level which is where he is at risk of infections. We'd obviously like to keep him on the weekly chemo schedule to treat the disease, but we can't risk having his white blood cell count be so low. So chemo has to be on hold.
3. He'll have to stay in the hospital until treatment for the infection is complete - at least 14 days more. I guess the good news is that we will get good rest and know that he is taken care of without having to administer the drugs ourselves.
The good news:
1. His fever wasn't meningitis - it's still a dangerous infection, but not nearly as severe as the meningitis.
2. He is gaining weight and eating well. He is up to 2.84KG = 6lbs 4oz. So he has improved from his 2.6KG - 5lbs 12ozs that he was when we admitted him. He still has a few more oz's to go for sure, but he looks a lot better as far as weight goes.

So glad it wasn't meningitis. If he continues to eat and gain weight it will only improve his fight over the infection. Just a minor set-back. Hang in there.
Are they considering a new Broviac? Sometimes the central line becomes the source of infection. They could put in a different central line and culture the tip of the current one for pseudomonas. So glad to hear he's gaining weight! I wish we weren't so far away, we will continue to pray for all of you and thank God for Cole's perfect healing. He's a fighter! Love, Lynne & Uncle Dan
I am following this daily and am praying for you all. He sounds like quite a fighter. The pic's are so cute. I love you all so much.
